We use typical values for homes like yours. Want a more accurate estimate?
Water-heating kWh estimates are derived from typical EnergyGuide “Estimated yearly energy use” values for electric tank water heaters. Learn more. Actual results depend on rate plans, household usage, and water heater behavior. We do our best to keep this accurate. If something looks off, email hello@thermosave.com.

Questions before you decide?
These are the most common questions before buying.
-
ThermoSave reduces water heating during high-price periods, whether from demand charges or time-based rates. It dynamically adjusts as electricity prices change from day to day. It also prevents waste when no hot water is used. Same hot water — just smarter timing.
-
No. ThermoSave is a one-time purchase — no subscription, no monthly fees. Cloud connectivity for scheduling and monitoring, as well as new features and improvements with software updates, is included at no extra cost.
-
Savings estimates depend primarily on how accurately your time-of-use (TOU) electricity pricing is set. You can adjust these rates in Advanced Settings so the estimate reflects your real utility costs. Savings for turning off water heating overnight, or during non-occupancy due to vacation and empty rental come in addition.
-
ThermoSave is a retrofit device that installs on your electric water heater and controls when it heats. You monitor and adjust it through a simple mobile interface.
-
ThermoSave prioritizes hot water availability. You set a schedule so the tank is heated ahead of the times you need it, while heating shifts away from expensive hours. There's also plenty of buffer: roughly half the tank's hot water can be drawn before you'd notice any temperature drop. Across our pilot homes over a year of use, no one reported running out of hot water.
-
Yes. ThermoSave works well for vacation and second homes in two ways. First, when a home sits empty, a water heater can waste ~1–3 kWh per day just maintaining temperature—ThermoSave pauses heating when the home is vacant and automatically resumes before you return. Second, the app supports multiple ThermoSave devices under the same user account, so you can manage several properties at once: switch between devices using the top-left dropdown menu, and rename each one so you know which is which.
-
ThermoSave is designed for electric resistance water heaters. Check the label or EnergyGuide sticker on your tank—if it says electric (and not heat pump or gas), it's likely compatible. ThermoSave supports heaters up to 5500 W (23 A at 240 V). Support for heat pump water heaters may come later, but gas water heaters will not be supported. If you're unsure, email hello@thermosave.com to assess compatibility
-
Yes. ThermoSave completely replaces any existing older-style analog or mechanical timer. It installs in place of the timer and takes over scheduling automatically.
-
ThermoSave is designed for straightforward installation on existing electric tank water heaters, with no plumbing required. You can install it yourself or have a local electrician help, depending on your comfort level and local requirements. See the installation guide for more information.
-
ThermoSave runs automatically in normal use. You can override behavior in the app or via the physical button using modes like Heat Now or Vacation.
-
Only you control ThermoSave—through the app or the physical button on the unit to switch modes. Your power company has no access to your unit and cannot turn off power to your heater. ThermoSave acts according to your schedule automatically, but the control stays entirely with you.
-
You'll still have hot water. If ThermoSave loses its internet connection, it stays in whatever mode it was last in, so nothing changes suddenly. Scheduling pauses until the connection returns, then resumes automatically. You can also change the mode (e.g. Heat now) using the physical button, even when Internet is unavailable.
-
During a power outage, ThermoSave behaves like a normal water heater with no negative impact. When power returns, it heats water to a usable temperature if needed and reconnects to scheduling as soon as possible.
-
Yes, it's safe, and it won't damage your heater. Tank water heaters already store water whether heating is on or off, and every water heater cycles heating on and off on its own. ThermoSave simply pauses heating during high electricity prices or when no hot water is needed, then reheats the tank to a full, safe temperature —so the water stays clean and the unit stays in good shape, with no extra wear.
