Estimate your hot water savings

Most electric water heaters run during the most expensive hours. ThermoSave shifts heating to cheaper times and prevents waste — automatically.

Savings estimate

Estimate your savings with electric resistance tank water heater on a utility TOU plan.

Some utility plans include a “demand charge” based on your highest power draw (kW) during peak windows. ThermoSave may reduce that peak by avoiding water-heater heating during those windows.

We use typical values for homes like yours. Want a more accurate estimate?

Tip: Use the energy charge (¢/kWh). If your bill shows generation + delivery, add them.

Water-heating kWh estimates are derived from typical EnergyGuide “Estimated yearly energy use” values for electric tank water heaters. Learn more. Actual results depend on rate plans, household usage, and water heater behavior. We do our best to keep this accurate. If something looks off, email hello@thermosave.com.

Questions before you decide?

These are the most common questions before reserving.

  • Savings estimates depend primarily on how accurately your time-of-use (TOU) electricity pricing is set. You can adjust these rates in Advanced Settings so the estimate reflects your real utility costs. Savings for turning off water heating during non-occupancy due to vacation and empty rental come in addition.

  • ThermoSave reduces water heating during high-price periods, whether from demand charges or time-based rates. It dynamically adjusts as electricity prices change from day to day. It also prevents waste when no hot water is used. Same hot water — just smarter timing.

  • Yes. When a home sits empty, a water heater can waste ~1–3 kWh per day maintaining temperature. ThermoSave pauses heating when the home is vacant and automatically resumes before you return.

  • Yes. ThermoSave lets you pause heating water between guests and automatically resume before check-in. This reduces wasted energy while keeping hot water ready when needed — like a smart thermostat for hot water.

  • ThermoSave is a retrofit device that installs on your electric water heater and controls when it heats. You monitor and adjust it through a simple mobile interface.

  • ThermoSave is designed for electric resistance water heaters. Check the label or EnergyGuide sticker on your tank — if it says electric (and not heat pump or gas), it’s likely compatible. Support for heat pump water heaters may come later, but gas water heaters will not be supported.

  • Yes. ThermoSave completely replaces any existing older-style analog or mechanical timer. It installs in place of the timer and takes over scheduling automatically.

  • Yes. Tank water heaters already store water whether heating is on or off. ThermoSave simply pauses heating during high electricity prices or when no hot water is needed, and reheats the tank automatically.

  • ThermoSave prioritizes hot water availability. It learns your household’s usage patterns and keeps the tank heated ahead of expected demand, while shifting heating away from expensive hours. In pilot homes, users reported no hot water outages after six months of use.

  • ThermoSave runs automatically in normal use. You can override behavior in the app using modes like Heat Now or Vacation.

  • ThermoSave is designed for straightforward installation on existing electric tank water heaters, with no plumbing required. You can install it yourself or have a local electrician help, depending on your comfort level and local requirements. See how installation works.

  • ThermoSave uses your home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to operate and stay up to date. We collect only what’s needed for the service, and details are outlined in our Privacy Policy.

  • ThermoSave works independently and you can control it. Home Assistant support will be available before shipping, enabling user-controlled scheduling alongside solar, batteries, and other systems.

  • During a power outage, ThermoSave behaves like a normal water heater with no negative impact. When power returns, it heats water to a usable temperature if needed and reconnects to pricing as soon as possible.
